TOOELE, Utah - Sunday September 12, 2010, at Miller Motorsports Park, Greg Pursley battled all the way back to win the Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts Bonus Challenge after nearly losing the race due to a pit error.
Moments after race leader Patrick Long slowed suddenly, due to a flat right front tire on Lap 34, Pursley grabbed the lead from Paulie Harraka.
Harraka wound up getting passed by Eric Curran for second, followed by Moses Smith in fourth and Kyle Kelley in fifth place. Long, who was awareded the Coors Light Pole Prize for his record lap earlier in the day, wound up 22nd - he was the defending champ at this race.
For Pursley, from Newhall, CA, it was his second career win. He also won the Kyle, Texas 2009 season opener. He led 11 laps before the first pit stops under green. Pursley left the pits with the gas overflow can attached after his stop, and was forced to re-enter pit road on the next pass as apenalty, which left him in 17th position.
Pursley was third by lap 33 and challenging Harraka. Both were trailing Long by five seconds when he suddenly slowed dramatically. After passing Long, Pursley went by Harraka a few laps later. Pursley radioed his pit crew on the final lap and said he thought a tire was low, but he still crossed the line with a .650 second margin over Curran.
Eric Holmes, the current points leader, finished third. He was followed by Tony Toste, Troy Ermish, Daryl Harr and Travis Millburn. Holmes padded his lead to 141 points over David Mayhew, who finished 14th, and to 178 points over Harraka.
This was race number five, and the final race in the Bill McAnally-promoted Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts Bonus Challenge. Eric Holmes won two races. Mayhew and Harraka each won one.
Greg Pursley nailed down a spot in next January's NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown with his win.
